These first few hours of State of Decay had me experiencing a range of emotions not dissimilar to those experienced in a detox program—happiness to sadness, denial to frustration, and finally acceptance. It’s been a lot of fun!

State of Decay is a mixture of The Walking Dead, Dead Rising, and DayZ all rolled into one. It’s an immersive open-world experience that, despite a few flaws, has a charm of its own. Which is no wonder why it recently became the fastest selling original XBLA title of all time.

When I first started playing the game, I was initially unimpressed with the cliché’ story. The game opens with you and your friend returning from a “much needed vacation” only to have your friend attacked by a psycho (they’re zombies but referred to as Zeds). You then have to make your way to a safehouse and it’s then that the game really begins. At no point is the word zombie ever murmured and your character only realizes that this is the “living dead” after someone thought to be dead, attacks your friend. It lacks all originality and is as predictable as any other B-movie.

But after playing for a few hours I think that this lame duck story is actually the red herring in the game. It draws you in with its predictability and makes you drop your guard just enough so you think you can dive into any combat situation—and then you die. And you’re character is really dead. They don’t respawn. It’s really what made me take a step back and try to understand the game better.

The game is setup where you have a health bar and vitality bar. If the health bar reaches zero you’re dead and when the vitality bar depletes, you don’t die, but you can’t do anything because your character is tired. If this happens when you’re in the middle of a zombie horde, you’re probably going to die—which happened to me, twice.

One of the most frustrating things about the game, which is also delightful, is that there isn’t any kind of tutorial to guide you. The game has descriptions and instructions on the core gameplay like combat and building up your base, but you have to find out yourself the different zombie types, how to proceed to the next objective, and how much time you have to complete missions.

This frustration is delightful because, like the survivors, you’re forced to figure things out on your own. Could this actually be the sign of crappy game design? Maybe, but I don’t believe that’s the case. It’s too well thought out and the game does provide you the tools to be successful. One of these “figure it out” moments came within my first hour when I picked up a radio/walkie talkie.

Over the radio, you keep getting updates that encourage you to explore the area further. Initially, I handled these other missions in the same manner I have in other games, I just let the missions stack, knowing I’d have plenty of time to get to the objective later. But that’s not the case!

The world is alive and evolving. Missions happen with or without your involvement, which can be brutal because if someone in your camp is in trouble and you don’t help them, when/if they return to camp they’ll be pissed at you and morale takes a dive.

This is a game that doesn’t even let you pause it! If you want to access your inventory you do it at the risk of getting attacked. You’re not even safe in your safe house. Zeds can scale the fence and attack you there too.

What I’ve learned in these first hours is that State of Decay is anything but predictable. The game is deeply involved and really puts you in the role of the survivor.

In one of the very last portions I played, two new missions popped up and when I looked at my map for their locations, I couldn’t find them. I zoomed out on the map and had a “holy crap” moment when I realized how huge the map really was. I had been fighting tooth and nail for just a small portion of it!
